pH Meters

pH Meters

Hydrogen ion concentration or pH measurement and control is an important part of any water treatment process. While it is common to use pH strips to check the acidity or alkalinity, digital pH meter for water is now being widely used across industries. This is because these are easy-to-use handy devices that may have the ability to measure multiple parameters such as ORP, TDS, chlorine concentration, and so on.

At Cannon Water Technology, we offer a variety of pH digital testers for water treatment processes in various configurations. We stock good quality digital pH meters from reputed manufacturers such as Myron L, HM Digital, and so on. We also offer all-in-one devices that determine multiple parameters aside from pH, such as hardness, ORP, conductivity, temperature, resistivity, and so on.

Overview of Digital pH Tester for Water

Salt and hydroxide compounds (OH-) are alkaline, while phenolic compounds (H+) are acidic, some of which may be present in the water sample in varied quantities, depending on its source. This decides the hydrogen ion concentration or pH of that water sample. pH values range from 0-14. Values from 0 to 6 indicate acidic water, 8-14 indicate alkalinity, while 7 indicates a neutral pH. Ideally, water which is used for domestic use and drinking must have a neutral to alkaline pH from 7 to 8. This can be determined with the help of a digital pH water tester.

Digital pH Meters and Accessories We Offer

Along with pH meters, we offer multimeters, buffer solutions, kits, and so on. Here are some of our offerings.

  • Digital multi-parameter testers: Most brands of the pH meters can actually test multiple parameters such as electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), and temperature among many others. Most of them can test eight to nine parameters. They come with a display screen and a user-friendly menu on simple push buttons.
  • pH meter kits: We offer kits comprising syringe, thermometer, and buffer solutions, while we sell the meter separately. We offer accessories separately as well, such as quinhydrone powder which acts as an electrode in pH measurement. We offer this powder in our kit along with a bottle of pH 4 solution.
  • Sensor storage solutions: It is essential that the sensor electrode remains hydrated at the right pH, usually pH4, when not in use. We offer these bottled solutions in specific quantities such as 59 ml.
  • Replacement sensors: We offer replacement sensors for our digital pH and chlorine testers. This makes it easy to instantly replace the bad sensor with a new one, which is possible in some of the models we offer.

Calibration and Maintenance of pH Digital Testers

Regular calibration and maintenance of pH meters contribute to their long operating life and prevent wrong outputs. Here are some relevant pointers.

  • First, refer to the instruction manual for the calibration procedure.
  • Ensure the pH meter is clean and free of dirt or contaminants. Rinse the electrode with distilled water to ensure this.
  • Switch on the pH meter and look for calibration control buttons.
  • Let the tester stabilize and warm up. Most of our models have automated temperature compensation (ATC) feature.
  • Set the pH tester to 7, which is neutral.
  • The buffer solutions commonly used are of pH values 4, 7, and 10. Some applications may require specific buffer pH values, which need to be customized and procured accordingly.
  • Use the buffer solution that matches the pH value, only after the tester reading stabilizes.
  • Dip the electrode set to neutral in the acidic buffer solution and then in the alkaline buffer solution, after rinsing in distilled water.
  • Most models have 2-point calibration, which is done at pH values of 4 and 10 for acidic and alkaline modes separately.
  • Sometimes, an additional calibration may be required.
  • Once the calibration is completed, finalize it by again rinsing the electrode in distilled water to remove buffer solution traces.
  • An essential maintenance tip here is to clean the electrode in distilled water after each use.
  • If your application demands the use of abrasive chemicals which leaves marks, you can use a mild detergent to clean the pH tester, aside from rinsing it in distilled water.
  • Calibrate the pH meter at least once in a month or as required.
  • Check for any physical signs such as electrode drift, wear, cracks, and so on to be able to repair or replace it on time.

Factors to Consider When Selecting Digital pH and Chlorine Tester

Here are some factors you may want to consider when selecting a digital pH meter for water testing.

  • Analyze your application requirements in terms of the measurement range and accuracy as well as the operating environment. Weigh all these factors against the digital pH and chlorine tester features.

  • Check the calibration type in the pH tester, such as single- or multi-point.
  • Check for the ATC feature in the tester as it helps in auto adjusting the readings based on temperature changes.
  • Check if the tester is handy with a display screen and if it has a user-friendly push button menu.
  • Check for the measurement speed and response time of the tester to display the reading.
  • Prefer a pH tester which has memory to store the previous readings as this comes handy during analysis, especially when onsite.
  • Ensure the device is durable and can withstand harsh industrial environments. Also check for features such as power source and the type and quality of batteries used in the digital pH and chlorine tester.

How to Use Our Digital pH Water Testers?

It’s quite easy to use our digital pH readers. Our pH meters are simple and handy digital devices which measure the hydrogen ion concentration in water sample with the help of a measuring probe connected to a digital meter. The devices come with a display screen. Simply follow these steps to get the right output.

  • Take the water sample in a glass jar and immerse the electrode in it.
  • Ensure the digital pH meter is calibrated to comparative values of known buffer solutions, usually with pH values of 4 and 7. This also depends on your application requirement.
  • Also, ensure you rinse the electrode in distilled water before and after each use.
  • Once you insert the probe in to the water sample or any given liquid, press the appropriate button such as calculate or measure.
  • The pH values will be immediately displayed on the screen, and will gradually stabilize at one value.
  • Once the value stabilizes, remove the probe and rinse it again in distilled water.
  • Clean the electrode using a napkin and store it in an acidic buffer solution when not in use.

Working and Structure of Our Digital pH Meters

Here are some pointers on the working and structure of our pH meter for water treatment processes.

  • pH is the hydrogen ion concentration in a fluid, and its measurement is based on the activity of hydrogen ions rather than the molar concentration.
  • A digital pH meter has a display, responsive and referral electrodes, and a user-friendly menu.
  • The electrode possesses internal and external tubes, wherein the internal tube has calibrated values, while the external tube is made of pH sensitive glass.
  • The measuring probe is usually a glass electrode or an ion-selective transistor. The electrode is sealed at the end with a bulb-like structure.
  • This glass electrode when immersed in the solution develops a charge that relates to the ions’ activity in the sample.
  • The electrodes produce a very minor voltage and the difference in values is noted. Thus, the change in the potential difference is measured and compared with the reference values which are pre-calibrated.
