Closed System Water Treatment For Leaky Systems

Posted by David Cannon on 28th Aug 2017

To continue to treat a closed heating or cooling system that leaks with a closed system treatment chemical can be very expensive. To not treat a leaking system can be even more expensive. A closed system that has a leak and no treatment is 100% guaranteed to corrode and develop fouled and plugged coils and heat exchangers. It is just a matter of time, before catastrophic failures will develop.

Traditional Water Treatment:

Nitrite based corrosion inhibitors are used in 90% of treated closed systems. The cost of nitrite based treatment is from $70.00 to $300.00 per 1000 gallons of water loss. Corrosion protection of multi-metal systems is excellent. Testing is simple and inexpensive. Chemical test kit cost under $75.00.

Advanced Water Treatment/Green Chemistry:

Ecological, safe, green polymer based corrosion inhibitors cost from $25.00 to $100.00 per 1000 gallons of water loss. Corrosion protection of multi-metal systems is excellent. Testing is simple and inexpensive. Chemical test kits cost under $100.00.

Lowest Cost Closed System Corrosion Treatment:

Silicate based corrosion inhibitors cost from $2.00 to $10.00 per 1000 gallons of water loss. Corrosion protection of multi-metal systems is good but not as good as the treatments listed above.. Testing is a little more complex and cost under $200.00 for a manual test kit and $650.00 for a digital analyzer.

So if your closed system is leaking 1,000 gallons per day, the cost to maintain a protective chemical treatment level is as low as $2.00 per day to around $6.00. Silicate is a non-polluting treatment that does not promote biological growth.
